Thracian Cult Complex near the Village of Starosel
The Thracian cult complex near the village of Starosel is one of the most significant archaeological discoveries in Bulgaria, unearthed in 2000 by archaeologist Georgi Kitov. It is located in the area known as Chetinyova Mound, about 4 km from the village, and is the largest known Thracian royal complex with a mausoleum. It dates back to the end of the 5th and the beginning of the 4th century BC.
The complex consists of six underground temple tombs, four of which are unique in their architectural design, along with several royal burials. The largest temple is located in Chetinyova Mound and is open to tourists. The entire mound is surrounded by a wall made of cut granite blocks, 241 meters long and up to 3.5 meters high, symbolizing the Sun according to Thracian religious beliefs.
Nearby is the “Horizon” temple, known for being the only discovered Thracian tomb with a colonnade. Archaeological findings in the area include over 120 burial mounds, of which only 22 have been explored to date.
The complex is part of the National Archaeological Reserve and is included in the list of Bulgaria’s Top 100 National Tourist Sites.
Visiting the Thracian cult complex near Starosel offers a unique opportunity to connect with the mysterious culture of the ancient Thracians and explore some of the most impressive architectural monuments from that era.
